They must be performed by a “maticar”, an official registrar.
Religious and symbolic ceremonies can be held before or after the civil ceremony.
There is no residency requirement for foreign couples.

If neither partner speaks Croatian, a court-appointed translator must be present.

Is my marriage recognized at home?
Yes. Civil weddings performed in Croatia are legally binding and recognized in most countries around the world.
After your ceremony, you’ll receive an official marriage certificate issued by the Croatian authorities. This certificate can then be legalized with an Apostille stamp or, if necessary, additional authentication for countries outside the Apostille Convention.
Our team can assist with obtaining and legalizing your marriage certificate to make sure it’s accepted in your home country. Religious and symbolic ceremonies, on the other hand, are not legally binding on their own — but they can complement your civil wedding either in Croatia or at home.
Do I need to be in Croatia for a certain time before the wedding?
No — there is no minimum residency requirement for getting married in Croatia.
You can arrive a few days before the ceremony, although many couples choose to come earlier to finalize details and enjoy the location. We recommend arriving at least 2–3 days in advance to meet with the registrar, complete final paperwork, and relax before the big day.
All major legal preparations can be handled remotely in advance with our assistance, so you won’t need to spend weeks in Croatia before your ceremony.
Can we hold the ceremony anywhere?
Yes, Croatia offers great flexibility when it comes to ceremony locations.
Civil ceremonies can be held in registry offices or at other approved venues, such as beaches, private villas, gardens, or historic sites. We’ll handle the location approval process with the Registry Office on your behalf.
Religious ceremonies typically take place in churches, synagogues, or temples, but some faiths also allow outdoor or private venue ceremonies depending on the officiant.

For symbolic ceremonies, you can conduct everything in your own language without a translator.

We recommend starting the process 6–12 months in advance for civil or religious ceremonies, especially during peak wedding season (May to September). This allows enough time to:
